What is yoga therapy?

Yoga is a philosophy which originated in India about 2,400 years ago and aims at bringing body, mind and emotions into harmony to reconnect with an inner deep sense of bliss, seen as our true divine nature. Initially an oral tradition shared amongst a few, yoga kept evolving and spreading over the centuries to become available to more and more people around the world.

Yoga therapy draws on yogic ancient wisdom, tools and techniques to empower each person to maintain a healthy body, balanced emotions and equanimity of the mind. The goal of yoga therapy is to foster and sustain wellbeing while embracing each person uniqueness and circumstances. This means that this practice is accessible to all regardless of your age, fitness level or physical abilities.

How does yoga therapy work?

Yoga therapy relies on the yogic view that human beings are made of 5 deeply intertwined and interdependent sheaths:

  • the physical sheath,
  • the physiological sheath,
  • the psychological sheath,
  • the intellectual sheath,
  • the bliss sheath.

Throughout the sessions, we work on these 5 sheaths to bring them back into balance so that you can:

  • feel more at ease in your body,
  • regain a sense of spaciousness in your body and breath,
  • feel more peaceful and calm,
  • experience a deep sense of relaxation,
  • feel more energised,
  • regain a more positive outlook on life.

How are yoga therapy sessions structured?

Each session begins with a short informal conversation to see what is there for you on a given day and how have things have evolved since the previous session.

The rest of the session is informed by that opening chat to help you move through whatever is present while supporting you towards the attainment your overarching goal(s) defined during the initial assessment.

Usually each session includes some physical practice (i.e. asanas and/or gentle movements), breathing practices and mindfulness and/or meditation practices. The length and intensity of each may vary from session to session to best support you through your journey.

At the end of the session, I will give you a home practice to empower you to explore the benefits of the different practices and learn how to self regulate. Home practices are usually 15min long and intended to be practiced daily. This is a key element: the small daily changes we commit to hold the power to generate positive transformations in our lives.

Frequently asked questions

My goal is to empower you to understand and integrate the various yogic practices in your daily life so that you can feel an improvement in your day to day. I offer short to medium term follow up (a few weeks to a few months) rather than long term.

The number of sessions needed depends on your aims and current situation. However, 6 sessions usually is a good starting point to give you enough time to experience, experiment with and incorporate the various practices in your daily life.

In terms of frequency, one session per week is often ideal. But again, this may vary based on your unique needs and situation.

At this time, all sessions are exclusively held online.

You can wear any clothes that you feel comfortable in which allow you to move freely. Typically, yoga or fitness outfits are suitable.

Make sure to have several layers to be comfortable throughout the session as there will be times when we won’t be moving and other periods when you might feel warmer depending on the type of work we are doing.

A yoga or fitness mat is ideal although not mandatory. Apart from that there is no other material needed.

All the space required is roughly the size of a yoga / fitness mat, about 2 meters long x 1 meter large.

Make sure you find a quiet space free from distractions and interruptions.

Absolutely! Yoga therapy doesn’t require a certain level of flexibility. Rather, all the practices are adjusted to meet the abilities of each person.

There is almost always an element of asana based practice in yoga therapy sessions, which level and length is adjusted to meet each person abilities and level of fitness. However, the asana practice is designed to support health and wellbeing purposes which remains the prime focus throughout the sessions.

Therefore, yoga therapy is not the place for those who seek to build extreme flexibility or strength. If that is something you are interested in, private yoga classes, advanced workshops or yoga teacher trainings might be best suited for you.
